The American Copper is a small but fiery butterfly, with brilliant orange-red forewings spotted in black contrasting with gray hindwings. Males are highly territorial, perching on low plants and chasing away any intruders. Despite its name and wide distribution in North America, some populations may be descended from European introductions.

Open fields, roadsides, disturbed areas, and meadows
Diet
Larvae: sheep sorrel and docks. Adults: nectar from low flowers
