Eastern Swamp Privet is a native shrub or small tree of floodplain forests and swamp edges in the southeastern United States. It produces small dark purple drupes in early fall that are an exceptionally important food source for wood ducks and migrating songbirds. It often grows with water tupelo and bald cypress in flooded bottomlands.
