The Banner-tailed Kangaroo Rat is named for the striking white tip on its long, tufted tail. It builds large, multi-chambered mound burrows that can be a foot high and several feet across and are used by many generations over decades. Its powerful bipedal leaps and highly sensitive hearing allow it to evade rattlesnakes with remarkable effectiveness.
