Yellow Lady's Slipper is a stunning native orchid with a bright yellow, inflated pouch and long, spirally twisted lateral petals of greenish-brown or maroon. It grows in rich, moist forests, calcareous woodlands, fens, and meadows across a broad range from Alaska to the southeastern United States. Like all native orchids, it is protected in most states and should never be transplanted, as it depends on specific soil fungi for survival. It is pollinated by native bees that enter the pouch and are forced to exit through a narrow opening dusted with pollen.
