Illustration of Acorn Weevil (Curculio glandium)

The Acorn Weevil is a small, brown weevil with an extraordinarily long, curved rostrum (snout) that the female uses to drill into acorns before depositing an egg inside. The larva develops within the acorn, eating the nutmeat, then chews out through the shell and pupates in soil over winter. Its absurdly elongated snout can be nearly as long as its body.
