The Evening Grosbeak is a large, boisterous finch of boreal forests that irrupts unpredictably into the northern and eastern United States, sometimes in massive numbers, then disappears for years. The male's yellow body, black-and-white wings, and pale bill make him unmistakable. Flocks descend on sunflower feeders with loud, ringing calls and crack seeds with their massive bills.
