Illustration of Black Guillemot (Cepphus grylle)

The Black Guillemot is a small alcid with striking white wing patches and brilliant red mouth lining and feet. Unlike most alcids that winter far offshore in large flocks, it tends to stay near shore year-round, often nesting in rock crevices and harbor structures. Its piping, whistling calls are distinctive along rocky North Atlantic shores.
