Scarlet Indian Paintbrush is a hemiparasitic wildflower that attaches to the roots of neighboring grasses and forbs to obtain nutrients. Its brilliant red bracts (not petals) make it one of the most eye-catching wildflowers of prairies and mountain meadows. Ruby-throated and broad-tailed hummingbirds are attracted to its color and visit for nectar.
