Illustration of Cowpea Weevil (Callosobruchus maculatus)

The Cowpea Weevil is a small, mottled brown-gray bean beetle (technically a bruchid) that is one of the world's most serious stored-grain pests. Larvae complete their entire development inside a single bean seed, emerging as adults through a circular exit hole. Despite its name, it infests many legumes beyond cowpeas and has spread globally with the grain trade.
