Elliot's Short-tailed Shrew was separated from the northern short-tailed shrew based on genetic and morphological differences and occupies the central Great Plains from Kansas to Nebraska and south into Oklahoma. Like other Blarina shrews, it produces venomous saliva used to subdue large prey items. It is associated with grasslands and forest edges of the central U.S.
