Common Manzanita is a distinctive shrub of California chaparral and foothill woodlands with smooth, deep-red-to-mahogany bark that is one of the most beautiful of any native shrub. Its small, urn-shaped pink flowers bloom in late winter and early spring, providing critical early nectar for hummingbirds and native bees. Bears and many birds eat the mealy berries.
