Illustration of Texas Antelope Squirrel (Ammospermophilus interpres)

The Texas Antelope Squirrel inhabits the Chihuahuan Desert of trans-Pecos Texas and adjacent Mexico, where it remains active even in extreme summer heat by regularly retreating to shade and pressing against cool rock surfaces to dump excess body heat. It carries a white tail stripe and runs with its tail arched over its back like its western relative. This squirrel is important seed disperser in Chihuahuan Desert ecosystems.
