Subalpine Fir has a characteristic narrow spire shape that sheds heavy snow loads in high-mountain environments. It grows near and above treeline across western North America, often forming krummholz mats in exposed, wind-blasted sites. Its purple cones are a valuable food source for grizzly bears and birds.
